Windows 8 /8.1 Limited Features Resolved.
Windows 8 / 8.1
Windows 8 and it's free official upgrade /8.1 is a well designed GUI ( Graphical User Interface ) operating system. Of course, it looks nice and interesting to start with, but we're always facing some sort of problems, the same goes with this version of windows. This release has modified a lot of things compared to previous version of windows (i.e., Windows 7) and some modifications in 8/8.1 are kinda annoying. Let's go though some basic changes they've made or limited and solutions to overcome the issues with this version of windows.
1. Removing Dual Boot Entry using BCDedit (Boot Configuration Details)
( Applies to Windows 7,Vista and XP )
Most often when you re-install windows or upgrade your system, if it is not properly done, you may face a problem of dual boot entry in windows boot menu even if the previous operating system in not there in your hard disk. That's what actual irritation is, but don't worry we'll just get it out in a couple of steps.
- Run the command prompt, go to Start->All Programs->Accessories-> Command Prompt (rt click) and -> Run as Administrator (Windows 7) , Search->Command Prompt (rt click) -> Run as administrator (Windows 8).
- Type " bcdedit " without quotes and you'll be presented with < Windows Boot Manager> and <Windows Boot Loader>.
- There you can see entry for OS that appears in boot menu, and it's corresponding identifier address. All you have to do is // rt click- > mark-> and select the identifier address of OS that you wish to remove from Boot Entry.
- After you've marked the identifier address of the windows entry (you wish to remove) , type
- Note that it deletes the entry permanently and it'll not come back again during startup.
- Suppose, you just wanted to hide the entry then, all you need to do is //
- Then choose default operating system and < uncheck " Time to display list of operating system" > and press ok.
2. Getting back The "Hibernate" Button
" Hibernate" Button is commonly used for temporarily saving current work in progess and turn off / power off the system so that, when you switch on the system the next time you'll get the same window as it was there before hibernating.
But, in Windows 8/8.1 it'll be hidden by default. To get it back in your power options
Go to " Control Panel -> Power Options -> Choose what the power button does -> Change settings that are currently unavailable-> (check the <Hibernate> button ) -> Save Changes .
That's all, now go to Power Button and you'll see Hibernate along with other option ( Sleep, Shutdown).
3. View the saved WiFi Password on your system
Unlike Windows 7, Win 8/8.1 do not provide the option to view the saved password of the network ,you were connected at least once before. You may either have forgotten your password or the password was not given to you, instead it have been manually entered by others.
So, this is how we see the saved password for the networks we've been connected before in the offline state.
We'll start by opening command prompt. Go to Search->cmd->run as administrator. Then type the following command.
netsh wlan show profiles -> This will serve you with all the names of the network you've been connected before. Then proceed with,
netsh wlan show profile name="name" key=clear
Note that the <name> is the name of the network for which you want to see the password. The password can be viewed in the key content under the security settings.
4. Installing the .Net Framework 3.5 on Windows 8/8.1
Like I said earlier, another limitation of Windows 8 is that .Net Framework 3.5 won't come pre-installed alongside Windows. So, users have to manually configure or enable this feature to make use of it.
So, You may be wondering,
What actually is .Net Framework 3.5 and why to install it ?
.NET Framework is a software framework developed by Microsoft that runs primarily on Microsoft Windows. It provides a run-time environment and the supported framework interfaces for the various application. Also offers the users an advanced system to create applications that take full advantage of the operating system's power to offer an improved visual appearance. For eg., For installing and running some HP Drivers, you'll need this feature. (like HP Support Assistance) and many more. This is because these drivers are designed to run on the same environment provided by .Net Framework.
Further, .Net Framework 3.5 contains features builded incrementally upon .Net Framework 2.0 and .Net Framework 3.0.
We'll proceed with the installation. You can either download the online installer from the Microsoft's site mentioned below and proceed with on-screen instructions.
Or, if you have the Installation Media ( for the version of windows 8 that you're running that can be either the installation disc or the bootable flash drive), you can make use of Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command line tool that supports for offline installion of this feature.
To do this, just simply open the command prompt with admin privileges and type the following command.
> DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:\sources\sxs
-where, Source is the full path address to the files needed to restore this feature from the Installation Media. You'll need to specify the path as configured or shown in your computer. For eg., my Installation Media shows up in " f " drive so, I need to replace the " d " with the corresponding drive letter that is "f ".
And, just wait for the installation to be completed. That's it. You're done.
